Did you know… Allegedly it was following a visit to Minster Pool with Erasmus Darwin while on a trip to Lichfield that US statesman and Lunar Society member Benjamin Franklin became ill and died. Lichfield’s archives are full of story snippets of residents moving to the Americas through the centuries, escaping difficulties in England and chasing the promise of a life in the New World. For some this meant religious freedom, for others a shot at the Gold Rush.
In conjunction with the Festival’s American theme, this 90 minute walking tour explores the historical connections between Lichfield and the United States through the stories of those who made the perilous transatlantic journey.
This walk will begin at the Samuel Johnson statue in the Market Square.
