One of the finest of the younger generation of British tenors joins us for a recital of love and passion. The programme includes Fauré’s exquisitely beautiful La Bonne Chanson celebrating love with unbounded optimism, while a selection of songs by the legendary Carlos Gardel, the ‘songbird of Buenos Aires’, summons up the spirit of 1920s Argentina.Nicholas Mulroy has sung throughout Europe and is also a member of I Fagiolini and the Dunedin Consort. John Reid is his regular recital partner.
After Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s residency here in 2004, who better to celebrate his 80th birthday than the stunning Australian String Quartet.
Sculthorpe’s Pacific Rim-inspired 8th quartet provides antipodean contrast to Haydn’s Fifths Quartet and the passion of Mendelssohn’s quartet. Mendelssohn was born only months before Haydn’s death in 1809, and this programme marks bothanniversaries.
The ASQ holds the impressive distinction of having won more international chamber music competitions than any other ensemble in Australian history. We are delighted to welcome them to Lichfield for the first time.
“This was four voices working as one, fitting all the pieces together with skill and grace –immaculate” Sydney Morning Herald
In conversation: Members of the ASQ and with Festival Director Richard Hawley at 6.30pm in the Lady Chapel. Free entry to Event 13C ticket holders.
8pm Lichfield Garrick 110mins All Classical Music Explained
Rainer Hersch returns to Lichfield for a stand-up comedy show with a difference.
Equally at home closing the show at the famous Comedy Store in London or conducting the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, here he turns his comic skills to answering those awkward questions, like “Why is organ music so boring?” and “How can I play a musical instrument without practising?”
“ A brilliant touch of comic madness” Time Out, London
